On 8 September 1943, following  the announcement of  Italian Armistice, the men being held in prisoner of war camps in the north west  of Italy took the first opportunity to escape

The camps they escaped from  were as follows:

IN PIEDMONT

PG 112 Turin  with the following subcamps:

PG 112/1 Ponte Stura,  PG 112/2 La Mandria (Venaria),  PG 112/4 Gassino,  PG 112/5  Spineto (Castellamonte),  PG 112/9 Beinasco

PG 106 Vercelli  (22 known subcamps)

PG113 Novara    (20 known subcamps)

IN  WESTERN LOMBARDY

PG 146 Mortara (34 subcamps)

What happened to them all?

Some made their way to Switzerland where they were interned (see Escape Routes to Switzerland)

Others  were recaptured and sent to Stalags in Germany, Austria or Poland

Some were hidden by families for all or part of the rest of the war - up to May 1945

Others  joined partisan groups  for  some of the time

After June 1944,  following the Allied invasion of Normandy, those still in Italy considered trying to get to France

This website deals with the men KNOWN to have crossed the Alps into France

and with those who perished in the attempt

It is incomplete but the research is continuing
